Carl Gustaf Hiort for Puunveisto Oy, 'Siesta' lounge chair, orange fabric, oak, Finland, design 1952

This sensuous armchair has a curved, slender seat with a slightly winged back. The chair leans slightly backwards and has curved armrests, a buttoned back with matching pillow and tapered, long diagonal legs. This chair is typical for the design of Hiort, as the chair is refined, well-finished and features traditional details.

Carl Gustaf Hiort (1911-1996) was a Finnish-Swedish interior designer who was based in Helsinki. Hiort was the head of his own production company, Puunveisto, in Helsinki from the 1940-1970s. Hiort payed much attention to detail and to craftwork, he was a strong advocate of handcrafted furniture of high quality, much like Danish furniture of the same period. Technique wise, he was ahead of his time as he worked with new materials such as plywood at a very early stage.
