Christian Krekels Coffee Table in Etched Brass Inlayed with Agate
Christian Krekels, coffee table, brass and enameled steel, inlayed with agate, Belgium, 1980s.
This luxurious and refined coffee table features an etched brass tabletop and robust, dramatic black legs. The etched top shows two patterns that are layered on one another. The first pattern consists of several smooth fields of dynamic lines, surrounding the agate. The other layer showcases a surface of various textured lines and forms.
In the 1970s a trend of decorative arts arose in Brussels. Key designers were Aldo Chale, Georges Mathias, Willy Daro, Lova Creation, Jean Claude Dresse and Christian Krekels worked in this style too. Their style was characterized by the use of gemstones as decorative element and the use of golden brass as primary color. The classical technique of etching was highly applied on their designs for coffee and cocktail tables.
