Charles Dudouyt, highboard, oak, France, circa 1937.
Rare solid oak cabinet designed by Charles Dudouyt. Its variety of shape and heights create an overal dynamic appearance which is amplified by the horizontal carved lines on the doorpanels, and characteristic for the Art Deco style in which Dudouyt operated. The door panel of the round cabinet at the left side can be shoved to one side to access ones personal belongings. Similar to this furniture piece is the 'Verhaeren' desk, which Dudouyt designed in 1937, and displays resemblances in its decoration. Altogether, the cabinet radiates sturdiness, but this is balanced by the round features of the design.
Charles Dudouyt (1885-1946) was a French designer and illustrator. In 1933, he moved to Paris where he abandoned the French classicism to opt for modernist sensibility. He mostly crafted wooden furniture in strong Art Deco forms, often using playful geometries and construction methods. His usage of an honest approach to simple materials such as wood, reminds of the robust Arts and Crafts Movement.
