Carl Gustaf Hiort af Ornäs, lounge chair, fabric and oak, Finland, 1940s.
This sensuous wingback armchair has a curved back, little wings and tapered oak legs. The chair leans slightly backwards and has curved armrests, a buttoned back and is both playful and quirky. This chair is typical for the design of Hiort, as the chair is refined, well-finished and features traditional details. The fabric of this chair is in good condition but if you wish to reupholster this chair please ask one of our advisors for more information on the options that our in-house upholstery studio can offer you.
Carl Gustaf Hiort (1911-1996) was a Finnish-Swedish interior designer who was based in Helsinki. Hiort was the head of his own production company, Puunveisto, in Helsinki from the 1940s-1970s. Hiort payed much attention to detail and to craftwork, he was a strong advocate of handcrafted furniture of high quality, much like Danish furniture of the same period. Technique wise, he was ahead of his time as he worked with new materials such as plywood at a very early stage.
