Bas van Pelt, coffee table and armchair, metal, sisal, the Netherlands, 1930s.
Wonderful set of Bas van Pelt side table and armchair. Both items are made of tubular metal that has gained a striking patina over time. Same goes for the sisal upholstery that contributes to the unique expression of this set. The round frame of the chair contrasts in a beautiful manner with the octagonal shaped tabletop.
During the first half of the 1930s, Van Pelt (1900-1945) created a number of designs of tubular steel furniture, which were manufactured by the company D3 and E.M.S. At that time, especially furniture designers with a functionalist mindset, were interested in the applications of tubular steel on furniture like seen at Bauhaus.
measurements of the table: 60cm (height) x 80 cm.
