Angelo Mangiarotti for Skipper, dining table ‘M1’, marble, design 1969
This sculptural table by Angelo Mangiarotti is a skilful example of postmodern design. The strikingly brown-toned marble table has a cone-shaped pedestal and a circular top with a strongly contrasting veins in white. The circular top rests perfectly on the cone. The design showcases a play of balance and rhythm. The design is architectural in the sense that the construction is monumental and solid and based on the laws of gravity. When the cone is placed exactly in the centre of the top, the table is stabile and strong by means of gravity.
Angelo Mangiarotti (1921-2012) was an Italian architect and Industrial designer with a reputation to mainly focus on the needs of the users of furniture. His designs are solid and strong and he always used materials that would stand the test of time. Being schooled as an architect, Mangiarotti was very precise in using the right material and the right sizing for his designs.
