Floor lamp, model A805 'Angel Wing', in metal, leather and brass, by Alvar Aalto for Valaisinpaja Oy, Finland, 1954.
Early Angel's Wing floor lamp by Alvar Aalto. Originally designed for the National Pensions Institute in Helsinki. The louvered shade of this floor lamp is made of thin painted metal strips that prevent glare by diffusing light evenly. The asymmetrical shape is reminiscent of wings– hence the nickname 'Angel's Wing'. The base and stem are leather-wrapped accompanied with brass details.
Alvar Aalto initially worked as an exhibition designer and later turned to architecture and furniture design. His designs are a superb example of the uncompromising spirit that has managed to overcome the barriers of style and taste, fashion and social class.
