Afra & Tobia Scarpa Pair of 'Artona' Armchairs
Afra & Tobia Scarpa for Maxalto, set of two 'Artona' armchairs, walnut and brown-blue checkered fabric, Italy 1975.
Pair of cubic Artona lounge chairs by Italian designer couple Afra and Tobia Scarpa. The Artona line by the Scarpa duo was in fact the first line ever produced by Maxalto, the specialist division of B&B Italia. Maxalto was originally set up in 1975 as a high-end division of B&B Italia to focus exclusively on the production of artisanal, mostly wood furniture. The Artona was their first project and also functions as a counter-message against the common prevailing use of plastics in furniture design during the postwar period. These chairs show absolute stunning craftsmanship. The design is simplistic and cubic. Highlight is the woodworking. The walnut is inlaid with dark lines of wood, which create the effect of ebony. This is best exposed in the curved back. The dark lines are beautifully visible and really brighten up the design.
Upholstered in original dark brown striped velvet. If admired reupholstery is possible in any kind of leather or fabric of your choice.
Please note that the fabric shows signs of age and use, with tears on the seat. Therefore, reupholstery is necessary. We are able, thanks to our in-house atelier, to reupholster these chairs in any type of fabric. The professional and experienced craftsmen in our atelier are specialists in the reupholstery of design furniture. With high attention for the original, they make sure every piece retains its value. Ask one of our advisors for more information regarding the almost endless possibilities our atelier has to offer.
