Adrian Pearsall Platform Sofa in Walnut and Pastel Pink Upholstery
Adrian Pearsall, 'Platform' sofa with two drawers, fabric, walnut, United States, 1960s
Adrian Pearsall is known for his rather unique sofa designs. The present model is no exception. On a low base of a thick walnut frame rests the sofa flanked with two drawers at the side. Ending on the same height like the seat the top of the drawer’s function as side tables. The seating itself shows a great, open character. With the absence of armrests Pearsall accomplished a flowing look with sensuous lines. The pastel pink upholstery forms a great combination with the natural appearance of the wooden color and grain.
Adrian Pearsall (1925-2011), trained as an architectural engineer, was a sailor and interior designer. In 1952, Pearsall opened his own furniture company 'Craft Associates. Pearsall designed some of the most sensuous, gracious midcentury design pieces around, sharing many of the design aesthetics by Vladimir Kagan. His pieces are characterized by flamboyant curves, upswept shapes and stretched proportions.
