Adrian Pearsall, 'Platform' sofa, fabric, walnut, United States, 1960s
Adrian Pearsall is known for his rather unique sofa designs. This one is no exception. On a low base of a thick walnut frame rests the sofa, which continues, resulting in side tables on either side of the seat. The seating itself shows a great, open character. Adrian Pearsall has often been inspired by boats, so it is no surprise that his designs resemble the shape of a boat. The seat rests on a platform that is based on an elongated rectangular shaped frame, which creates a floating appearance. Currently upholstered in soft green fabric that forms a great combination with the natural appearance of the wooden color and grain.
Adrian Pearsall (1925-2011), trained as an architectural engineer, was a sailor and interior designer. In 1952, Pearsall opened his own furniture company 'Craft Associates. Pearsall designed some of the most sensuous, gracious midcentury design pieces around, sharing many of the design aesthetics by Vladimir Kagan. His pieces are characterized by flamboyant curves, upswept shapes and stretched proportions.
