Rare Pietro Cascella ‘Pinocchio’ Floor Lamp in Chestnut
Pietro Cascella, Pinocchio floor lamp, no. 438/500, chestnut, Italy, 1972
Pietro Cascella (1921-2008) held the distinguished title of Italy's foremost monumental marble sculptor, renowned for his semi-abstract style. This lamp holds a distinctive place within his body of work for two primary reasons: first, it serves a functional purpose, and second, it is crafted from wood. Functional principles, such as flexibility and adaptability, guided Cascella through the design process of the Pinocchio floor lamp (1972). He conceived a modular approach to this particular lighting system, enabling the user to personalize and adjust the direction of the light according to its preferences and needs. A significant part of the design incorporates practical elements, such as adjustable arms, and rotatable and interlocking mechanisms. A decoration is subordinate to the constructive element, focusing on the essential composition of geometric forms and usage of materials. The design highlights the lamp's mechanical components, giving it a raw and sophisticated look, yet the warm-toned chestnut wood and the atmospheric light lend it a serene appearance.
The lamp is signed with “Pietro Cascella 500/438”. Please note that this item is in good, used condition.
