This piece easily catches the eye of the viewer with its rhythmic, asymmetrical doors. The three doors give access to the large amount of storage space. Behind the two doors on the left you will find a rod for hanging garments, and the right door shows shelves from top to bottom behind it. Made in Chapo's preferred material, a soft elm with beautiful grain, this piece is clearly recognizable as a piece of his hand.

This piece is part of the 'Chlacc' system (Construction Homogène Lamélle Assemblée Collée Cloué, or Homegenous Laminated Assembled Glued Nailed Construction). With this system, Pierre Chapo developed his own patented wood-joining technique. Chapo took lengths of solid wood and would glue them together to create different-sized surfaces and volumes.

Pierre Chapo (1927-1987) was born in a family of craftsmen and trained as an architect at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Already from a young age, he felt the need to roam the world. He was only twenty-one when he left France in order to spend the next few years traveling through England and Scandinavia. In December of 1951, he was living back in Paris, where he met his future wife, Nicole. Their meeting was the beginning of a lifelong union. Together, the lovebirds travelled through South and North America being captivated by the architectural diversity. Back in France, he and his partner Nicole set up Société Chapo in 1957. Société Chapo was a design workshop and gallery in one where he showed his own creations. However, Nicole also presented her ceramics, and textiles here and they even exhibited other great designers of that period. In 1958, they opened their famous gallery at 14 Boulevard de l'Hopital. Chapo's work originated by means of special commissions that could later be adapted to universal needs. Throughout his career, Chapo combined his interest for contemporary design with his love for traditional craftsmanship. In his designs, he was inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's balanced lines, Corbusier's research on proportions and the ideas of Bauhaus. The three principles that motivated Pierre Chapo were 'material, form, and function.' He measured his furniture by means of golden ratio and used elmwood as his preferred material. Unfortunately, Chapo fell ill, and he died in 1987, however, until his last day, he kept on designing and working.

VAT within the EU: When buying or delivering an item within the EU, VAT usually applies and will be added.

Guillerme et Chambron for Votre Maison, sideboard, solid stained oak, brass, France, 1960s

This charming large sideboard is made by the designer duo Guillerme & Chambron. After graduating in 1960, they embarked on a journey together, making significant contributions to construction, furniture, and industrial design until 1980. Tresoldi and Salvati introduced a new architectural concept that diverged from the dominant rationalist movement influenced by figures like Le Corbusier. Their innovative approach transcended the functionalist constraints of rationalism, embracing the immaterial and spiritual aspects of architectural design.

Their artistic vision centered around creating a "space of freedom," viewing space as a playful dimension. They coordinated furniture and fixtures seamlessly and sometimes even eliminated furniture altogether, designing enclosed spatial shells that became integral parts of the architecture. Their design philosophy for living spaces was grounded in three main principles: gestaltic geometry, the timbricity of color, and structural simplicity. From the outset of their twenty-year collaboration, Salvati and Tresoldi utilized these elements to adapt modern psychology to create habitable spaces suitable for contemporary life. Color became a key feature in their designs, with a diverse palette used to define and transform spaces. Their spaces were never empty, brought to life by the forms and colors within them, avoiding the typical clutter of objects and furniture.

In terms of spatial design, Salvati and Tresoldi's interior projects emphasized a triad of columns, half-columns, and curved spaces. These elements contrasted sharply with the rectilinear, box-like spaces of contemporary architecture. In an era where mechanistic ideologies prevailed, curves were often seen as wasteful and irrational. Rectilinear planes were deemed more rational and masculine, while curvilinear planes were considered more sensual and feminine. For Salvati and Tresoldi, these elements provided environmental fluidity and challenged the rigidity of prevailing geometric norms. Their work masterfully combined these three design elements, enhanced by full, vibrant, and emotionally expressive colors.

Their commitment to balancing shape, material, and color led them to collaborate with other artists. They believed in working as equals, with all disciplines holding balanced importance in a project. This approach was rooted in the old synthesis of integrating the arts, which they interpreted in their unique way to create unified projects where various forms of knowledge converged. The renowned architect Gio Ponti had advocated for interdisciplinarity in architecture in the early 1930s, promoting collaboration between architects and other fields in Domus magazine. Ponti recognized the impact of Salvati and Tresoldi's work early on, and their projects were regularly featured in Domus, cementing their influence in the architectural world.

The present cabinet exemplifies Salvati and Tresoldi's philosophy on living space. It features a half-column cylindrical structure painted in a dazzling lilac color, embodying their commitment to vibrant, symbolic hues. This storage unit was part of an Italian apartment interior designed by Salvati and Tresoldi, which included other pieces that spoke the same design language. The curved door panels open to reveal multiple shelves structured along its length with an additional drawer, showcasing their innovative approach to combining form and function within a harmonious, playful space.

Kindly note that the piece is in good, used condition. During the twentieth century, Cantu was considered the Italian city of furniture. However, after the war, Cantu was unable to catch up with the rapid changes and advances and there were more foreign countries such as Scandinavia who, with their styles, grew in popularity and formed a massive competition for Cantu. Therefore, Cantu needed to renewal their designs that were often outdated, in order to stay up to date with trends and gain new popularity. In the spring of 1954, the board of Cantu decided to launch an international prize competition for furniture designers that would in order to revive the economy of the local design and draw attention to Cantu. The “Selettiva del Mobile” was born and would be organized every two years up until 1975. Set up as a real international competition, it brought together designers from all over the world such as Franco Albini, Gio Ponti, Ico Parisi, Paolo Buffa, Ettore Sotssas, BBPR, and many others. The selection for received projects was done by the Concorso Internazionale del Mobili, a highly qualified jury.

Taichiro Nakai participated during the edition from 17th September to 5th of October 1955. As did Taichiro Nakai. With his presentation of a living room design, Nakai won a special prize together with Finish designer Ilmari Tapiovaraa and the Milanese architect Eugenia Alberti Reggio. It is easily understandable why Nakai had attracted the attention of the jury. With his salon, he had analyzed the market clearly and he was able to create designs with Japanese principles as well Italian constraints. His lines are simple and clen yet energetic and organic, all characteristic for Japanese creations. The structure of the storage unit feels similar to a Franco Albini bookcase, but is carried out with Japanese geometric simplicity. During the 1890s, Vittorio became the sole owner of the company and had great success with his refined wooden furniture. Vittorio Valabrega became well-known for his furniture in the floral Art Nouveau style, but as a true child of the 19th century, his company also manufactured furniture in Neo-Renaissance and the French Rococo Louis XV-style. His designs received positive attention and were awarded at World Exhibitions. At the famous exhibition in Paris in 1900, Vittorio even received a gold medal.

It was at the age of 24 that Ernesto got on board with his father’s business. His involvement from 1925 onwards had a great impact on the company. Ernesto decided to change the company’s name to Mobilart in 1928 and radically redirected the course. Whereas Vittorio was inspired by a variety of contemporary and historic styles, Ernesto chose for a different approach. He renounced the 19th century mixture of styles and approached furniture design in the same manner as the highly influential William Morris of the English Arts and Crafts movement. Their reform was an artistic reaction to the widespread industrialization of the 19th century.

Ernesto despised products of poor quality and chose high quality materials that would last a lifetime. The furniture he created in the late 1920s and 1930s are a true testament to his beliefs. With his irregular carvings of oakwood, the hammered hinges, flowing edges, embossed surfaces his furniture shows quality, attention to detail and ultimate craftsmanship. During the Second World War, the two met in a stalag, a Prussian prisoner camp, while being imprisoned by the Germans in East Prussia and started a great friendship based on their intense and deep passion for interior design. In 1948, Chambron resigned from his job as a painter and decorator on the Rue Nollet in Paris to move to Lille, in the North of France and join Guillerme. A year later, the two met cabinetmaker Émile Dariosecq, who was the owner of a workshop close by. It was during this meeting, that they decided to create their own company. They named it “Votre Maison”, meaning “Your Home”, which became the soul of the company. With this, they wanted to create pieces that focused on functionality combined with a beautiful design useful for daily life, by which they created a worldwide reputation. The piece is exceptionally rare and has remained relatively unknown to the public eye, with limited variations made. However, similar-designed wardrobes gained significant recognition during that period and were prominently featured in Domus magazine issue number 76, in April 1934. The publication dedicated a commentary on several apartments designed by the studio, under the title "Expression of some modern furnishings". The author notes that Studio B.B.P.R. represents a fresh, youthful energy. Their work reflects new ideas and evolving tastes, which they consider important for shaping modern living environments. The furniture by these architects is described as simple, but this simplicity isn't due to cutting out or reducing elements (which is common in minimalism). Instead, it is a result of careful thought and design, ensuring the pieces are functional and in harmony with life. The furniture featured in the depicted residencies encompasses several characteristics, such as clarity, balance, and a sense of peace. These features suggest that the designs are not just visually appealing but also practical and comfortable to live with. The author values the combination of rational material use and an instinctive sense of proportion, highlighting how well the volumes (spaces and forms) are balanced.

This bespoke sideboard exemplifies several of the design principles mentioned, like simplicity achieved through thoughtful composition. A well-considered design with a very minimalist, clean look. The right door features a large mirror, while the left side showcases the natural wood, highlighting its subtle grain and warm tones. The wardrobe uses maplewood in a way that feels natural and harmonious. The wood’s texture is preserved, showing the architects' respect for the materials and their rational use without unnecessary adornment. When opened, the inside reveals a well-organized, functional storage facility. The left side contains a series of drawers and small compartments, while the right side is a spacious hanging area. The central section is adorned with circular niches accented by chromium bars, providing structural decoration without sacrificing functionality. A beautiful piece by Studio B.B.P.R., where every detail - from the calculated proportions to the rational use of materials - is carefully evaluated, imbued with a sense of warmth and liveliness.

Studio B.B.P.R. was an Italian architectural partnership founded in Milan in 1932 by Gianluigi Banfi (1910-1945), Lodovico Barbiano di Belgiojoso (1909-2004), Enrico Peressutti (1908-1976) and Ernesto Nathan Rogers (1909-1969) who had studied at the Politecnico di Milano. B.B.P.R. was thus an acronym formed from the first letters of their family names. The architects found each other in their opposition to fascism in Italy in the 1930s and 1940s during Mussolini's autocratic regime. The architects therefore believed in developing a style that would have no references to contemporary politics. During the Second World War, they all joined the resistance. However, Rogers, a Jew, fled to Switzerland and both Belgiojoso and Banfi were deported to the Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria, where Banfi died in 1945. Despite the immense loss of Banfi, their architectural practice continued in the same name as before the war. Especially during the 1950s, they created many of their great projects. With their designs, they strongly reacted against the International Style with its rectilinear forms and taut plane surfaces that have been completely stripped of applied ornamentation. Instead, the group enriched their buildings with medieval references. For B.B.P.R., their philosophy on art and architecture is somewhat between tradition and modernism; their use of post-beam structures and modular elements parallels with the constructive thinking of modern architects. However, as modernism rejects the existence of historical forms, B.B.P.R. reinterprets history's heritage and continues with respect for the work of their predecessors. Ernesto Nathan Rogers referred to it as “preesistenze ambientali” (the pre-existing environment) and adopt a “caso per caso” (case by case) interpretation to work with, instead of against, the surroundings. One of their well-known designs is the creation of the Torre Velasca in Milan, with strong references to medieval architecture. The architects were also frequently employed to create interior spaces altogether with furniture designs. Born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, in 1919, he discovered his love for furniture design at a young age. He already began crafting his own furniture and custom furniture for family and friends in his adolescent years. He studied engineering at Drexel university but was drafted to serve in the Army Air Corps during the Second World War. After his return from the army, he settled in New Hope, Pennsylvania, a place that was crowded with craftspeople such as Paul Evans. It was during this period that he met Evans and throughout the 1950s and 1960s the two men shared a studio. Therefore, they often collaborated, creating some of the most important furniture of the Midcentury Studio Furniture Movement. Together, they shared a love for materials and a passion for handcrafted pieces. Therefore, all his pieces are handmade from high quality, grained woods that often recall their natural shape and form. Another natural material that he often used was slate, the deep grey material was often utilized for table or credenza tops. Over the span of slightly more than half a century, Powell's production yielded just around 1000 pieces. The designer stands in stark contrast to the prolific output of contemporaries such as the renowned furniture designer George Nakashima, who is estimated to have created well over 10,000 objects. It was in fact Nakashima who urged Powell to begin designing for himself in the first place. Today, Powell’s well-known carved wooden cabinets, consoles, chairs and dining tables are one of the most sought-after pieces from that era.
Wardrobe, walnut burl and veneer, mirrored glass, glass, brass, Italy, 1950s

A beautiful and luxurious Italian wardrobe or very large cabinet. At the age of 16, he joined his father’s furniture shop, the Atelier di Varedo, which was fully engaged in designing and furnishing homes inspired by the Italian Art Deco movement. The designer of the atelier was the Italian architect Gino Maggioni (1898-1955) who was known for his Viennese Jugendstil orientation of the early 20th century. In the 1930s, he graduated from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera and Politecnico di Milano, where he studied Fine Arts and Architecture respectively. In 1932, the family company was renamed ‘Arredamenti Borsani’ and opened its first studio in Milan. During this period, he encountered Avant-Garde artists of various artistic disciplines like Lucio Fontana (1899-1968), Agenore Fabbri (1911-1998), Aligi Sassu (1912-2000), Roberto Crippa (1921-1972), Fausto Melotti (1901-1986), Arnaldo Pomodoro (1926-) and Giò Pomodoro (1930-2002). These collaborations resulted in the creation of furniture and interior design projects with a high-level of craftsmanship and artistry. In 1953, Borsani founded together with his twin brother Fulgenzio Borsani ‘Tecno’, a design and manufacturing company that produced items based on mechanical innovations and refined technicality. The ‘P40’ adjustable lounge chair (1953) has become the ideological manifesto of Borsani's Tecno program, and still remains the best known, exemplary piece in the Tecno catalogue. Other iconic works that were produced by Tecno were created by Gio Ponti (1891-1979), Vico cham (1920-2006), Carlo de Carli (1910-1999), Gae Aulenti (1927-2012), and many other influential Italian designers. The oak material has an incredibly warm texture that shows nice wood grains and admirable patina, and in combination with the characteristic traits, the wardrobe gives the room a lively ambiance.

The French designer duo Jacques Chambron (1914-2001) and Robert Guillerme (1913-1990) started their production postwar. Robert Guillerme studied design and architecture at the École Boule and graduated first in his class in 1934. Meanwhile, Jacques Chambron graduated from the School of Applied Arts in Reims. Most of the furniture designed by this duo shows a strong character and has a great expressive woodwork. The three of them divided their work equally. Overall, Guillerme worked as a designer, Chambron as a commercial, and Dariosecq’s workshop manufactured the pieces. Throughout their career, ‘Votre Maison’ produced over two thousand models, leaving a lasting mark in the world of design.
