Studio Salvatori, (G. Salvatori, A. Bazzini) for Sormani, table lamp, model 'Cartesio', metal, silkscreened plexiglass, Italy, 1971
Impressive table lamp, designed by Studio Salvatori for Sormani. This 'Cartesio' table lamp features warm filtered light formed by two plates in silk-screened transparent plexiglass. Two perforated sheet metal cubes contain the warm light source that highlight the playful pink pattern in the plexiglass.
This wonderful lamp is a great example of the technical advances in lamp design in Italy, starting in the late 1960s. It represents an imaginative response to the availability of translucent plexiglass sheets. The use of plexiglass opened a whole new range of possibilities in the field of lamp design. The material has the transparent quality of glass, while at the same time being less fragile and therefore less dangerous in use. It also has a very specific way of transmitting the light, which appears to be passing through the sheet slower than through glass. Together with the almost hallucinating pattern in the plexiglass, that is lit from below by four bulbs, this lamp has hypnotizing qualities.
