Paavo Tynell for Taito, table lamp model 5066, brass, beech, metal, fabric, Finland, 1940s
This eccentric table lamp is a visual pleasure in many senses and is designed by the talented Finish designer Paavo Tynell. Firstly, the perforated top of the shade shows a delicate pattern of small dots through which the light shines elegantly. Furthermore, the side is made of pleated fabric that adds another textural sentiment to the design and enriches the overall striking expression. The wooden stem has a natural color that perfectly matches with the overall design. The base is provided with an on/off switch and is detailed with three squares layered on top of each other, creating a nice dynamic. The overall age-appropriate patina contributes to the authentic look of the lamp. Paavo Tynell once again proves his eye for proportions and detail.
Paavo Tynell (1890-1973) was born in Finland and started to work as a tin smith and from there onwards became a blacksmith. From this trade he slowly came into the craft of making and designing lamp. He was co-founder of Taito ab, a lamp manufacturer. A turning point for Tynell's career when he started to collaborate with Finland House in New York, a gallery that promoted Finnish design in New York. His designs were drastically different from those of all American designers and became very popular, this resulted in large experimental works that Tynell is now famous for. Tynell's designs are characterized by organic forms and the use of perforated brass.
