Jacob Kjaer Sofa in Patinated Reddish Brown Leather and Mahogany

Sale price$18,400.00

Attributed to Jacob Kjaer, Sofa, leather, mahogany, Denmark, 1940s

This sofa is attributed to the Danish cabinetmaker Jacob Kjaer. The design truly intensifies the experience of sitting by means of the impressive construction featuring delicate lines and curved shapes. The backrest develops gracefully into the armrests in a curvaceous movement, which contributes to the sofa’s solid and stabile appearance. Kjaer decided to stay modest with decoration by implementing tufted buttons on the seat, which add a grandiose touch to the sofa. The patinated leather radiates a vibrant reddish brown color that beautifully matches with the warm tone of the mahogany legs.

Jacob Kjaer (1896-1957) started working as a furniture designer in 1915. From 1918-20 he studied at the Institute of Arts and Crafts Museum in Berlin, then worked in Paris and returned to Copenhagen in 1926. Here, he opened his own workshop. His highly skilled craftsmanship and designs got honored with the Hand Work Medal in 1954.
