Studio D'Arte Palma, pair of 'Peroba de Rose' armchairs, Brazilian hardwood and fabric, Brazil, 1950s, Attributed to Lina Bo Bardi and Giancarlo Palanti.

These chairs are designed for Studio D'Arte Palma and probably designed by Lina Bo Bardi and Giancarlo Palanti for Studio d´Arte Palma. The Casa de Vidro Lina Bo Bardi research team is currently conducting in-depth research into these chairs and is in the middle of the process of attribution to Lina Bo Bardi and Giancarlo Palanti.

Before working in Brazil, Bo Bardi worked at Gio Ponti’s office in 1939. The influence of Ponti’s philosophy and the Italian modern movement is very noticeable in this chair. This is for instance visible in the cantilevered arms and the open character of the construction. Furthermore, the chair features playful elements typical for Bo Bardi’s designs, such as the boomerang shaped legs and the cantilevered arms with cushions on top.

Architect and designer Lina Bo Bardi (1914-1992) was born in Rome in 1914. At the age of 25, she graduated from the Rome College of Architecture. After working in the office of Ponti, she moved to Brazil, where she stayed the rest of her life. Devoting her life to the promotion of the social and cultural potential of architecture and design, she produced varied work: from architectural projects and publications to modern furniture reflective of this ethos. In 1948, she founded the Studio de Arte e Arquitetura Palma together with fellow Italian immigrant Giancarlo Palanti (1906-1977). Their designs were often based on dunctionality and accessibility while still mimicking the natural and cultural beauty of Brazil. Moreover, they were inspired by the rawness of nature and, therefore, they often used natural Brazilian wood in their furniture.
