Ernest Igl strived for the creation of a desk that focused on functionality combined with an aesthetically pleasing design for daily use. This is discernible in the playful composition of curved lines and round shapes executed in the whole construction. On the left side, three drawers are situated hidden perfectly in the column of the design. At the right side there is a storage compartment placed. The desk contains two compartments, one of which has three drawers. The top is furnished with green vinyl which adds a fresh touch the overall industrial appearance.

Studio B.B.P.R. was an Italian architectural partnership founded in Milan in 1932 by Gianluigi Banfi (1910-1945), Lodovico Barbiano di Belgiojoso (1909-2004), Enrico Peressutti (1908-1976) and Ernesto Nathan Rogers (1909-1969) who had studied at the Politecnico di Milano. B.B.P.R. was thus an acronym formed from the first letters of their family names. The architects found each other in their opposition to fascism in Italy in the 1930s and 1940s during Mussolini's autocratic regime. The architects therefore believed in developing a style that would have no references to contemporary politics. During the Second World War, they all joined the resistance. However, Rogers, a Jew, fled to Switzerland and both Belgiojoso and Banfi were deported to the Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria, where Banfi died in 1945. Despite the immense loss of Banfi, their architectural practice continued in the same name as before after the war. Especially during the 1950s, they created many of their great projects. With their designs, they strongly reacted against the International Style with its rectilinear forms and taut plane surfaces that have been completely stripped of applied ornamentation. Instead, the group enriched their buildings with medieval references. For B.B.P.R., their philosophy on art and architecture is somewhat between tradition and modernism; their use of post-beam structures and modular elements parallels with the constructive thinking of modern architects. However, as modernism rejects the existence of historical forms, B.B.P.R. reinterprets history's heritage and continues with respect for the work of their predecessors. Ernesto Nathan Rogers referred to it as “preesistenze ambientali” (the pre-existing environment) and adopt a “caso per caso” (case by case) interpretation to work with, instead of against, the surroundings. One of their well-known designs is the creation of the Torre Velasca in Milan, with strong references to medieval architecture. The architects were also frequently employed to create interior spaces altogether with furniture designs.

Please note that the pieces are in used condition with stains on the steel, fissures in the plastic elements and scratches. The desk is composed of two distinct tables, each with its own chest of drawers, constructed independently in varying heights. This innovative design enables the two parts to be arranged together to form a seamless corner desk or used independently as two distinct tables. The black lacquered wengé tabletop is a stunning complement to the black-coated steel frame, while the teak drawers and chrome runners at the side add a touch of warmth and luxury to the piece. The drawers feature the characteristic handles that are synonymous with Wabbes' work, each one carefully engraved with his name, a mark of authenticity and craftsmanship. The design is a testament to Jules Wabbes' keen eye for detail and his ability to seamlessly blend form and function. Its clean lines and precise proportions make it a true masterpiece of modernist furniture design, which remains as relevant today as it was when it was first conceived.
Jules Wabbes (1919-1974) was one of the leading Belgian furniture designers and interior architects of the Postwar period. Born in Brussels in 1919, he began his career as an actor. However, after several other professions, he eventually started to become interested in antiques. When Wabbes was 24, he opened an antiques shop where some of the furniture needed restoration. Therefore, he created a small workshop where he taught himself how to restore furniture. Therefore, In contrast to many of his contemporaries, he wasn't trained as a designer or architect but learned the craft of designing furniture by sheer necessity. Alongside restoration, he also started to design furniture. Because of the success of his ventures, it led to Wabbes designing many interiors for his clients. In 1971, Wabbes became professor at the Sint-Lucasinstituut in Brussels. Unfortunately, Wabbes died at an early age in 1974 due to cancer. Overall, his work is aristocratic and modest, and characterized by a sensual use of materials and a clear, almost architectural tectonics. Wabbes developed a line and idiom of its own, averse to the playful and swinging style of many other furniture designs of the Postwar period. Wabbes, influenced by American designers such as Edward Wormley, chose to build his furniture with solid wood giving his designs not only a luxurious appearance but also honest, timeless and sophisticated aesthetics.

Measurements return:
120 W x 52 D x 66 H cm.

Please note that this item is in good, used condition.

VAT within the EU: When buying or delivering an item within the EU, VAT usually applies and will be added.

Writing desk, cherry, mahogany, brass, formica, Italy, 1950s

Very elegant desk made in Italy in the 1950s. Robert Guillerme studied design and architecture at the École Boule and graduated first in his class in 1934. Meanwhile, Jacques Chambron graduated from the School of Applied Arts in Reims. During the Second World War, the two met in a stalag, a Prussian prisoner camp, while being imprisoned by the Germans in East Prussia and started a great friendship based on their intense and deep passion for interior design. In 1948, Chambron resigned from his job as a painter and decorator on the Rue Nollet in Paris to move to Lille, in the North of France and join Guillerme. A year later, the two met cabinetmaker Émile Dariosecq, who was the owner of a workshop close by. It was during this meeting, that they decided to create their own company. They named it “Votre Maison”, meaning “Your Home”, which became the soul of the company. With this, they wanted to create pieces that focused on functionality combined with a beautiful design useful for daily life, by which they created a worldwide reputation. Most of the furniture designed by this duo shows a strong character and has a great expressive woodwork. The three of them divided their work equally. This is mostly due to the boldly angled legs that are being held in place by diagonal stretchers. Wegner designed the desk in 1953 and took inspiration from seventeenth-century Spanish tables that also have slanted legs and metal struts. Wegner's furniture was designed with the greatest understanding of materials, construction techniques, and use. He is known to be an excellent cabinet maker with thorough understanding of the materials he worked with, yet his greatest aim was to create expressive and exciting design. Although Wegner was a functionalist, he was not a rational dogmatist such as Kaare Klint, of whom he was a student. Instead, his designs sparkle with inventiveness and sculptural sense. However, this never meant that his organic and sensuous forms left the strict rules of functionalism. At heart, Wegner was an idealist. He was relentless in his quest for the best chair: 'there is never one damn thing that cannot be made better'. But Wegner was aware of the fact that you cannot design the 'perfect' chair, which gave him the freedom to produce as much as possible. He left behind more than 3500 drawings and about 500 of his designs went into production. His designs feature in the UN Building and Seagram Building in New York, UNESCO's headquarters. B.B.P.R. was thus an acronym formed from the first letters of their family names. The architects found each other in their opposition to fascism in Italy in the 1930s and 1940s during Mussolini's autocratic regime. In Italy, injection-molding techniques found a lot of popularity to manufacture bright and colorful furniture. Especially injection-molded, glass fiber reinforced plastic was a newly common substance to achieve the funky, fun designs inspired by the Space Age. An orange-colored version of a similar model furnished the MIB headquarters in the movie Men in Black 3 (2012). In 2009, the US company Steelcase re-edited Hofmann's desk, the 'Igl-Jet', producing a limited edition of 1,970 pieces. When the desk was first made in 1970-71, Hofmann employed groundbreaking technology for his designs. His initial desk was one of the first to be made entirely out of plastic. The revolutionary concept and grand vision behind this corner desk are evident in its rounded corners, soft edges, and stunning shapes. A remarkable feature is the movable construction, making it possible to position it as one long item or as a corner desk. Two storage compartments with drawers allow the user to store its stationary. This sophisticated storage facility, along with details such as geometrically shaped drawers and round ornaments truly contribute to the unique design idea.

In 1969, a successful collaboration between German office furniture maker Werndl and Ernest Hofmann began. With the desks 'Igl-Top' and 'Igl-Jet', as well as a shelf, Hofmann secured an important role in office furniture design during 1970-1971. His designs were groundbreaking and only possible due to the use of a new material. Hofmann designed the first one-piece desk made entirely out of polyurethane. The material was liquid and poured into a mold, where two components reacted together to form a flat, hard surface. By using plastic, Hofmann was able to create a desk with unusual organic shapes and rounded corners.

Ernest Hofmann (1920-2001) – in 1954, he gave himself the artist name ‘Igl’ – was a multi talent. His oeuvre includes an impressive number of products used for all kinds of situations in life. Hofmann, born in Prague in 1920, studied graphic arts in his hometown, in Karlsbad and in Munich, where he and his wife settled. Hofmann firstly worked as an illustrator, graphic artist, and cartoonist for well-known schoolbook publishers. In 1962, they moved to Rosenheim, which marked the beginning of Hofmann’s more design orientated career.

Kindly be advised that the color palette of this item can be tailored to specific wishes of our clients. Between 1963 and 1973, he oversaw the reconstruction and redesign of a company’s head office in Trelleborg, in southern Sweden – his first long-term project carried out with his own team. The commission extended beyond the architecture itself, as he was also responsible for the building’s interior design. Around 1965, this desk was produced as part of a custom office suite designed specifically for the company’s owner, and put in reality by Nordiska Kompaniet. Archival photographs show the desk positioned freely in the office space, complemented by a small drawer cabinet and paired with a high-backed chair upholstered in matching leather.

The construction of the desk is based on a striking U-shaped form, with the continuous leather surface flowing seamlessly from the wide tabletop down to the base and back up again, creating a sculptural loop. A single central support connects the desktop to the lower platform, emphasizing structural clarity and contributing to its architectural presence. Thies chose to cover the entire desk in rich cognac leather, which is tightly fitted to the curves and planes of the structure, accentuating its fluid silhouette and enhancing the sense of continuity. A long rectangular inlay of marble punctuates the tabletop, its vivid veins in tones of white and brown introducing a natural contrast to the uniform leather. Moreover, the desk integrates a compact set of drawers tucked neatly beneath the right-hand side of the top, offering discreet storage without disturbing the purity of the form. While rational in its functionality, the overall design leans towards the monumental, positioning the desk as a commanding centerpiece within the office. In this way, Thies fused his architectural training with his furniture design, achieving a piece that is at once utilitarian and emblematic of modernist ideals.

Rolf Rickard Thies (1927-2012), a German-born architect, began his studies at the University of Karlsruhe before relocating to Sweden in the mid-1950s. Drawn by Sweden’s strong embrace of modernist architecture – both in the construction industry and public opinion – he enrolled at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm to continue his education. After gaining experience in several architectural practices, Thies established his own office in 1960. Over the years, he worked on a wide range of projects, including public buildings, residential developments, private homes, interiors, and furniture design. Beyond his practice, he contributed actively to architectural discourse through articles and books, and in the 1970s his urban planning concepts brought him international recognition. The model was initially part of the coordinated furniture for the ENI building in San Donato Milanese. The original angled shape of the top was influenced by the hexagonal floor plan of the building, designed by Marcello Nizzoli and Mario Oliveri. The T96 desk's form was less rigid and more dynamic, making it appealing. Its swiveling drawer units made it an innovative model that met the growing needs of modern offices, prioritizing practicality, utility, and interaction over prestige. At the age of 16, he joined his father’s furniture shop, the Atelier di Varedo, which was fully engaged in designing and furnishing homes inspired by the Italian Art Deco movement. The designer of the atelier was the Italian architect Gino Maggioni (1898-1955) who was known for his Viennese Jugendstil orientation of the early 20th century. In the 1930s, he graduated from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera and Politecnico di Milano, where he studied Fine Arts and Architecture respectively. In 1932, the family company was renamed ‘Arredamenti Borsani’ and opened its first studio in Milan. During this period, he encountered Avant-Garde artists of various artistic disciplines like Lucio Fontana (1899-1968), Agenore Fabbri (1911-1998), Aligi Sassu (1912-2000), Roberto Crippa (1921-1972), Fausto Melotti (1901-1986), Arnaldo Pomodoro (1926-) and Giò Pomodoro (1930-2002). These collaborations resulted in the creation of furniture and interior design projects with a high-level of craftsmanship and artistry. In 1953, Borsani founded together with his twin brother Fulgenzio Borsani ‘Tecno’, a design and manufacturing company that produced items based on mechanical innovations and refined technicality. The ‘P40’ adjustable lounge chair (1953) has become the ideological manifesto of Borsani's Tecno program, and still remains the best known, exemplary piece in the Tecno catalogue. Other iconic works that were produced by Tecno were created by Gio Ponti (1891-1979), Vico Magistretti (1920-2006), Carlo de Carli (1910-1999), Gae Aulenti (1927-2012), and many other influential Italian designers. Osvaldo Borsani died in 1985 in Milan. His diverse and sophisticated oeuvre is to be found in permanent collections, such as of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, Neue Sammlung in Munich, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Trienalle di Milano Museum. He was born in Spokane, Washington and enrolled in the University of Washington program in architecture. After his graduation in 1931, he decided to live his life as a bohemian in France. Afterwards, he spent some time in North Africa and eventually settled in Japan for some time. There, he started working for Antonin Raymond, who was an American architect. While working for Raymond, Nakashima extensively toured Japan while trying to understand the Japanese architecture and design. Around 1940, Nakashima decided to leave Japan and returned to the US. However, like many others with a Japanese ancestry, he was interned during World War Two and sent to Camp Minidoka in Idaho. There, Nakashima met a master woodcarver who tutored him in Japanese crafting techniques. From him, he learned to master traditional Japanese hand tools and joinery techniques. From here onwards, he began to use woodworking with discipline and patience, striving towards perfection in his designs. In 1943, he was released from the camp and invited by Antonin Raymond to live in his farm in New Hope, Pennsylvania. During this period, New Hope formed the home port for many great designers such as Phillip Lloyd Powell and Paul Evans. Nakashima was a very spiritual and philosophical designer. The basis of Nakashima's work was derived from his practice of integral yoga. Therefore, primary goal of Nakashima's work was to live in harmony with nature rather than to destroy it for their own use. Above all, Nakashima wanted to embody a message to all modern societies that we must constantly remember the eternal in all that we do. He often said of his own work that he gave trees a second life. His designs are known for their exquisite craftsmanship and are often 'signed' with dovetails and butterfly connections. With these ideas in mind, Nakashima created his own style based on Japanese designs and shop practices, combined with the American and International Modern Styles. Therefore, he became one of the best 20th century American Art furniture designers. His early years, spent in the family’s countryside home, nurtured his appreciation for nature and its harmonious forms. Later, when his family relocated to Milan, Albini pursued his passion for architecture at the Polytechnic University of Milan, earning his degree in 1929. His career began in the studios of Gio Ponti and Emilio Lancia, where he was initially influenced by the 20th-century classical approach to furniture design. That same year, he traveled to Barcelona for the International Exhibition and then to Paris, where he is believed to have visited Le Corbusier’s atelier.

Albini’s early work focused on interior design, but a pivotal moment in his career came after a discussion with Edoardo Persico, a key figure in Italian Rationalism. This conversation marked his transition toward modernist principles, leading him to join the editorial team of Casabella, a crucial platform for architectural debate and experimentation. Influenced by the European avant-garde, Albini integrated elements from the Wiener Werkstätte, French Art Deco, and De Stijl, enriching the Italian discourse on rationalist architecture.

In 1931, he established his first studio with Renato Camus and Giancarlo Palanti, focusing on social housing and urban planning. His projects often reflected the clarity and structure championed by Walter Gropius, with a preference for linear, factory-inspired buildings arranged in precise geometric grids. This approach sought to introduce air, light, and green spaces into urban environments, countering the chaotic expansion of the city. His first personal residence, the Pestarini Villa (1938) in Milan, showcased these ideals and was featured prominently in Casabella under the editorial direction of Giuseppe Pagano.

Throughout the 1930s, Albini designed numerous installations for the Milan Triennale and trade fairs, using these temporary structures to explore innovative ideas. His work often featured Cartesian spaces arranged in geometric grids, skeletal metal frameworks, and transparent walls of glass or fabric, as seen in the INA Pavilions at the Milan Trade Fair and the Levante Fair in Bari. These projects allowed him to experiment with spatial organization and materials in ways that would later influence his permanent architectural works.

After World War II, Albini’s career expanded significantly as Italy embarked on reconstruction. His practice grew in scope, particularly with the addition of Franca Helg as a partner in 1952, a collaboration that would last for the rest of his career. Albini’s architectural contributions were diverse. This included social housing, such as the Mangiagalli neighborhood in Milan (1950-1952), together with Ignazio Gardella, and the employees housing for the Gres company in Colognola, Bergamo (1954-1956). Albini also worked on high-profile commissions, where furniture pieces such as the Poltroncina Adriana (1940), the Luisa armchair (1955), and the Tre Pezzi armchair (1959), became integral elements of the interiors.

In 1962, the Albini-Helg studio expanded with the inclusion of Antonio Piva, followed by Marco Albini in 1965, evolving into the Studio di Architettura Franco Albini, Franca Helg, Antonio Piva, Marco Albini. This period marked a deepening engagement with urban planning and infrastructure, as well as continued refinement of his architectural philosophy.

Beyond his built work and furniture design, Albini was deeply committed to education. From 1954 to 1974, he taught Composition and Architecture at institutions including the Polytechnic University of Turin, the IUAV in Venice, and later the Polytechnic University of Milan. His teaching style was characterized by intellectual rigor, emphasizing clarity in design choices and the ethical responsibility of architecture. He mentored many students who went on to become prominent architects. Albini believed that architecture should serve not only a functional purpose but also carry cultural and intellectual significance. This philosophy shaped both his work and his teachings, ensuring his influence endured long after his passing. Franco Albini died in Milan on November 1, 1977, but his legacy as a visionary architect, designer, and educator continues to inspire modern architectural thought.

Knoll International

Knoll International was founded in New York by the 26 year old German Hans Knoll (1914-1955) in 1938. Overall, Guillerme worked as a designer, Chambron as a commercial, and Dariosecq’s workshop manufactured the pieces. Bovirke first produced a model after a design by Juhl in 1953. This was a teak version with four polychrome painted wood drawers. This specific desk is likely a custom piece, designed especially for the office. It is an exquisite version executed in teak with two split brass handles: a very typical Juhl design trademark. At the age of 33 Finn Juhl opened his own furniture design practice. With three drawers seamlessly integrated into the design, this piece is both functional and a true statement in craftsmanship and vision. During the 1890s, Vittorio became the sole owner of the company and had great success with his refined wooden furniture. Vittorio Valabrega became well-known for his furniture in the floral Art Nouveau style, but as a true child of the 19th century, his company also manufactured furniture in Neo-Renaissance and the French Rococo Louis XV-style. His designs received positive attention and were awarded at World Exhibitions. At the famous exhibition in Paris in 1900, Vittorio even received a gold medal.

It was at the age of 24 that Ernesto got on board with his father’s business. His involvement from 1925 onwards had a great impact on the company. Ernesto decided to change the company’s name to Mobilart in 1928 and radically redirected the course. Whereas Vittorio was inspired by a variety of contemporary and historic styles, Ernesto chose for a different approach. He renounced the 19th century mixture of styles and approached furniture design in the same manner as the highly influential William Morris of the English Arts and Crafts movement. Their reform was an artistic reaction to the widespread industrialization of the 19th century.

Ernesto despised products of poor quality and chose high quality materials that would last a lifetime. The furniture he created in the late 1920s and 1930s are a true testament to his beliefs. Their furniture of the late 1940s and 1950s often moved beyond straightforward functional construction, favoring elegant, animated lines, tapered supports and an almost calligraphic handling of wood. The framework of this desk has a similar quality: long, sweeping members curve across the width of the desk, crossing and converging towards the centre before extending outward again in a fluid, continuous movement. Buffa’s artistic repertoire is notably distinguished by his expert fusion of neoclassical and sleek Art Deco formal elements. Crafted with finesse and elegance, Buffa’s premium-quality pieces were fashioned from refined materials, with the explicit purpose of furnishing the homes of a discerning and affluent clientele. These furniture creations were tailored to meet the demands of individuals who were inclined towards contemporary aesthetics, functionalism, and comfort. Buffa’s creative repertoire extended beyond furniture design to architecture, and he undertook an array of commissions that spanned public buildings, as well as villas and country homes.

Paolo Buffa’s formative years were spent amidst an artistic milieu, having been born to Giovanni Buffa, a renowned draftsman of ex- ceptional talent. Giovanni Buffa shared ownership of a highly pros- perous workshop dedicated to the creation of exquisite stained glass artistry. Among his notable works are the stained glass windows of the illustrious Duomo di Milano, a historic cathedral located in Milan. Such a creative household fostered an environ- ment of artistic excellence, which undoubtedly played a crucial role in shaping Paolo Buffa’s artistic sensibilities.

Buffa’s artistic training commenced at the prestigious Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, and he eventually obtained his degree from the Politecnico

di Milano in 1927. After gaining experience working in his father’s studio, Buffa went on to work as an apprentice at the Ponti e Lancia studio, which was jointly owned by the celebrated architects Gio Ponti (1891- 1979) and Emilio Lancia (1890-1973). This experience proved to be a significant turning point in Buffa’s career, as he drew inspiration from Lombard Neoclassicism and was exposed to the ideas and concepts of some of the most prominent architects of the region. He assimilated these teachings and employed them in his own work, which was characterized by a fusion of traditional Lombard woodworking techniques and modern design aesthetics.

In 1928, Paolo Buffa founded his own design studio in Milan in partner- ship with architect Antonio Cassi Ramelli (1905-1980). Here, they pro- duced an extensive collection of furniture designs that drew inspiration from the classical revival style, albeit with a softened touch. In 1936, Buffa branched out on his own to establish an independent studio. He made a name for himself by showcasing his work at exhibitions, including the prestigious Triennale di Milano. Buffa’s furnishings were numerous and varied, but always tailored to the specific needs and desires of his discerning clients. Each piece was crafted to perfection by highly skilled artisans, such as cabinetmakers Turri Mosè, Fratelli Lietti, Quarti, Serafino Arrighi, Colico, and Angelo Marelli. Buffa’s passion for design persisted throughout his life, and he remained actively engaged in the field until his death in 1970.
