In 1933, Wirkkala began to studiy industrial arts at the Central School of Applied Arts and graduated in 1936. Under his fellow students was no other than Ilmari Tapiovaara. After forced military service and the Second World War, Wirkkala started to work successfully as a glass artist. He also worked as a graphic, exhibition and furniture designer. As he said himself "my fatal defect is that I am interested in too many things". His oeuvre contains cutlery, glass ware, furniture and sculptures. At the Triennale in 1951, Wirkkala was aquainted with Gio Ponti and his family to whom Wirkkala began a friendship. One of his trademarks is his incorporation of Finnish flora and fauna in his design. He is inspired by the materials and appearances of nature. His sensitive approach to different materials and his great craftsmanship resulted in striking designs. Already in the 1940s Wirkkala’s interest for plywood arose. By grinding laminated plywood Wirkkala achieved rhythmic lines. These patterns would often resemble in leaves or other natural shapes. The table top is covered with coarsely woven fabric ‘sisal’.

Bastiaan Johannes van Pelt (1900-1945) was a Dutch furniture designer and interior designer. As son of a book printer, he spend his time after school working in several printing companies in Holland. At that time he already engaged in topics like designing furniture, interiors, carpets and fabrics, graphic work and pottery. In 1927, he quit his old job and started to work at a furniture factory owned by his father-in-law J.C. Jansen in Overschie. Together with his brother-in-law, Jan Jansen, they produced various designs for furniture which were manufactured in series. During the first half of the 1930s, Van Pelt created a number of designs for tubular steel furniture, which were manufactured by the company D3 and E.M.S. Overschie. During this period, his designs evoke a strong resemblance to the ethos of the iconic Bauhaus. Simplicity and functionality were the core values within this movement, and Van Pelt managed to create furniture according to them, by the application of tubular steel, simple geometric forms, and materials which facilitated mass production. After 1938, Van Pelt turned away from the functionalist mindset and began designing in the style of the ‘Delfste school’, which was more engaged in historical shapes and traditional manufacturing methods.

Van Pelt always dreamed of having his own business and he did not hesitate when he got the opportunity to take over the store ‘My Home woninginrichting’ located on ‘De Lange Houtstraat’ in The Hague, in 1931. He transformed the store into a thriving company in the field of modern home furnishings. It functioned primarily as a show room where he exhibited a selected range of modern furniture and upholstery accessories. For instance, his collections consisted of specifically metal furniture and lamps by D3, E.M.S. Overschie, and Thonet in combination with his own designs. The success of the store resulted in opening three more showrooms in Maastricht (1934), Enschede (1936) and, Amsterdam (1938). His clientele consisted of the wealthy bourgeoisie and middle class, and in particular of lawyers and doctors. Diplomats who visited the royal city for a while, had the possibility to rent furniture from his store.

Bas van Pelt decided to actively participate during World War Two. His country house ‘De Pal’ in Emst served as a depot for ammunition and a hiding place between 1943 and 1945. Architect and industrial designer Willem Hendrik Gispen (1890-1981) arrived at Van Pelt’s place to hide from the Germans after he got released. From May 1944, he was imprisoned for a whole year in various concentration camps. On May 24, 1945, a few days after his liberation, Van Pelt died at the age of 44 in Stalag XB, a concentration camp near Hamburg. Van Pelt's successful design studio and interior store with various branches, has been taken over by his wife, and later their daughter.

Kindly note that the table is in pre-owned condition. At the age of twenty-five, the outbreak of the Second World War started and Wirkkala soon served the Finnish army. Wirkkala's approach to design was highly innovative and ranged from furniture, porcelain, glass, jewelry and tableware. His talent excelled in combining organic forms into industrial manufactured designs. A striking example are his inlaid coffee tables that he designed for Asko. His work is distinguished by a cohesive and original style, securing him a lasting place in 20th-century design history. Among his extensive collection of furniture pieces, the 1961 "Sheriff Chair" is perhaps the most celebrated, known for its vibrant personality and its bold reimagining of traditional seating. Alongside the chair, Rodrigues designed a coffee table within the Sheriff line, lesser-known but equally representative of his style. His use of organic materials like wood, leather, and cane, combined with the almost hand-crafted nature of his pieces, distinguishes his work. The table features a softly oval top, crafted from rectangular-shaped sawn slats that highlight the natural grain and unique variations in the wood. Rodrigues enhances the tactile quality with a subtle embossed surface, achieved through gouge-cut techniques. The spindle legs, joined by meticulously carved crossbars, emphasize structural integrity and craftsmanship.

Rodrigues's work was driven by the pursuit of both practical and symbolic functionality, aiming to create pieces that would serve not only physical needs but also enhance the emotional experience of the user. Over his career, he crafted more than a thousand unique designs, overseeing each stage from initial concept to finished product. Although Rodrigues valued the idea of standardization, he adapted his designs at the prototype stage to allow for variations suited to different users’ needs. This approach, while challenging for mass production, helped define his market: a cultured, discerning audience with a taste for high-quality, refined pieces.

Sergio Rodrigues (1927-2014) emerged as a pivotal figure in the 1950s, during a time when modern Brazilian architecture had firmly taken root, yet furniture design remained anchored in outdated styles. Recognizing this gap, Rodrigues set out to create furniture that embodied both the modernist principles and a distinctly Brazilian identity. Over his prolific career, he designed more than 1,200 unique pieces, merging clean, modern lines with a warm, authentic Brazilian spirit. Collaborating closely with Oscar Niemeyer, he became the preferred interior designer for Niemeyer's iconic buildings in Brasília. Rodrigues’s dedication to a contemporary Brazilian design language resulted in a distinctive style: robust, personal, and unapologetically pure. Yet, he remained deeply connected to Brazil’s design heritage, often incorporating native woods like jacaranda, which added a rich, natural quality to his creations. The table’s design is strong yet refined, emphasizing the raw beauty of the natural wood grain, which is showcased prominently across the round tabletop. Supported by four robust cylindrical legs, the table exudes a balanced simplicity. A defining feature of this piece is the signature wood joinery, a trademark of Chapo’s craftsmanship, which not only adds structural integrity but also highlights his respect for traditional woodworking techniques in a modern, minimalist form.

Pierre Chapo (1927-1987) was born in a family of craftsmen and trained as an architect at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Already from a young age, he felt the need to roam the world. He was only twenty-one when he left France in order to spend the next few years traveling through England and Scandinavia. In December of 1951, he was living back in Paris, where he met his future wife, Nicole. Their meeting was the beginning of a lifelong union. Together, the lovebirds travelled through South and North America being captivated by the architectural diversity. Back in France, he and his partner Nicole set up Société Chapo in 1957. Société Chapo was a design workshop and gallery in one where he showed his own creations. However, Nicole also presented her ceramics, and textiles here and they even exhibited other great designers of that period. In 1958, they opened their famous gallery at 14 Boulevard de l'Hopital. Chapo's work originated by means of special commissions that could later be adapted to universal needs. Throughout his career, Chapo combined his interest for contemporary design with his love for traditional craftsmanship. In his designs, he was inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's balanced lines, Corbusier's research on proportions and the ideas of Bauhaus. The three principles that motivated Pierre Chapo were 'material, form, and function.' He measured his furniture by means of golden ratio and used elmwood as his preferred material. Unfortunately, Chapo fell ill, and he died in 1987, however, until his last day, he kept on designing and working.
Willy Daro, illuminated coffee table, etched brass, agate, lacquered laminated wood, Belgium, 1970s

Mesmerizing coffee table by the Belgian artist Willy Daro from the 1970s. Unlike the Bauhaus movement, which established a new institute, Italy's design evolution unfolded in the refined confines of upper-class private spaces. It was within these sophisticated realms that the paths of influential figures like Gio Ponti, Massimo Campigli, Fausto Melotti, Ico, and his wife Luisa intersected. Parisi's journey began when, at the age of twenty, he earned his degree as an Industrial Head Technician from the Istituto Tecnico G. Castellini. It was during this period that he crafted his first designs, starting his prolific career. Prior to his mandatory wartime service, Parisi also delved into the realms of painting and photography. However, it was in the postwar era that Parisi's life truly unfolded. His encounter with Luisa Aiani sparked a transformative chapter. Subsequently, his designs garnered recognition and found a place in prestigious exhibitions. In 1958, Parisi started a collaboration with MIM Roma, followed by another significant partnership with Stildomus in 1959. This marked the beginning of a period where his innovative designs left an enduring mark on the world of Italian design. The piece rests on four circular tapered legs supporting a long tabletop that celebrates the natural character of the wood. Its free edges create an organic form and an uneven surface, showcasing the material’s inherent beauty. Visible details include the round leg joints at the surface and a dovetail key joint, adding both strength and visual interest. Powell selected an expressive piece of wood and masterfully integrated its bold presence into the design. The use of traditional joinery, including wood joints for the legs and a butterfly key on the top, results in a striking composition that unites the raw vitality of nature with the artistry of the maker.

Phillip Lloyd Powell (1919-2008) is one of the essential members of the American Studio Craft Movement. Born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, in 1919, he discovered his love for furniture design at a young age. He already began crafting his own furniture and custom furniture for family and friends in his adolescent years. He studied engineering at Drexel university but was drafted to serve in the Army Air Corps during the Second World War. After his return from the army, he settled in New Hope, Pennsylvania, a place that was crowded with craftspeople such as Paul Evans. It was during this period that he met Evans and throughout the 1950s and 1960s the two men shared a studio. Therefore, they often collaborated, creating some of the most important furniture of the Midcentury Studio Furniture Movement. Together, they shared a love for materials and a passion for handcrafted pieces. Therefore, all his pieces are handmade from high quality, grained woods that often recall their natural shape and form. Another natural material that he often used was slate, the deep grey material was often utilized for table or credenza tops. Over the span of slightly more than half a century, Powell's production yielded just around 1000 pieces. The designer stands in stark contrast to the prolific output of contemporaries such as the renowned furniture designer George Nakashima, who is estimated to have created well over 10,000 objects. It was in fact Nakashima who urged Powell to begin designing for himself in the first place. Today, Powell’s well-known carved wooden cabinets, consoles, chairs and dining tables are one of the most sought-after pieces from that era. Born and raised in Helsinki, Wirkkala started his education at the National School of Applied Arts in the capital. Afterwards, he began his career in graphic design. At the age of twenty-five, the outbreak of the Second World War started and Wirkkala soon served the Finnish army. As the war ended in 1945, Wirkkala continued his work as a designer by joining the glass manufacturer ‘Iittala’, where he worked on numerous designs till the end of his life. Wirkkala's approach to design was highly innovative and ranged from furniture, porcelain, glass, jewelry and tableware. His talent excelled in combining organic forms into industrial manufactured designs. A striking example are his inlaid coffee tables that he designed for Asko. For this, he used laminated sheets of plywood sanded to a smooth surface that resembles an abstract leaf. Throughout his career, Chapo combined his interest for contemporary design with his love for traditional craftmanship.
