Pair of Afra & Tobia Scarpa 'Artona' Cabinets
Afra & Tobia Scarpa, chest of drawers, model 'Artona', rosewood, leather, Italy, 1970s Pair of two rectangular cabinets with drawers, designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa. The cabinets feature ten drawers, with contrasting black handles. The drawers are covered in warm terracotta leather. On the sides, the cabinets feature a beautifully grained rosewood veneer. They can easily be moved because of the wheels underneath. The cabinets are designed as part of the Artona line by the Scarpa duo. It was in fact the first line ever produced by Maxalto, the specialist division of B&B Italia. Maxalto was originally set up in 1975 as a high-end division of B&B Italia to focus exclusively on the production of artisanal, mostly wood furniture. The Artona was their first project and also functions as a counter-message against the common prevailing use of plastics in furniture design during the postwar period.
