The clear structure of the shelf creates a striking design. All horizontal shelves are colored black and in contrast with the white vertical elements. Due to the expressive unsymmetric arrangement of the two white sides and the white element functioning as a backwall, the black shelves hang over on one side. He wasn't (as many of his contemporaries) trained as a designer or architect but learned the Craft of designer furniture by sheer necessity. When Wabbes was 24, he opened an antiques shop where some of the furniture was in need of restoration. Therefore, he opened a small workshop where he taught himself how to restore furniture. Alongside restoration he also started to design furniture. His work is aristocratic and modest, and characterised by a sensual use of materials and a clear, almost architectural tectonics. Wabbes developed a line and idiom of its own, averse to the playful and swinging style of many other furniture designs of the postwar period. Wabbes, influenced by American designers such as Edward Wormley, chose to build his furniture with solid wood giving his designs not only a luxurious appearance but also honest, timeless and sophisticated aesthetics.

Kindly note that the item is in pre-owned condition with visible signs of age and use. The unit consists of four columns each equipped with drawers at the bottom and glass shelves. One row has a cabinet with a door that can be placed freely. This design by B.B.P.R. is truly enchanting, the wonderful detailing in the drawers, the richness of the walnut, the playful brass feet and the sheer height.

Studio B.B.P.R. was an Italian architectural partnership founded in Milan in 1932 by Gianluigi Banfi (1910-1945), Lodovico Barbiano di Belgiojoso (1909-2004), Enrico Peressutti (1908-1976) and Ernesto Nathan Rogers (1909-1969) who had studied at the Politecnico di Milano. B.B.P.R. was thus an acronym formed from the first letters of their family names. The architects found each other in their opposition to fascism in Italy in the 1930s and 1940s during Mussolini's autocratic regime. The architects therefore believed in developing a style that would have no references to contemporary politics. During the Second World War, they all joined the resistance. However, Rogers, a Jew, fled to Switzerland and both Belgiojoso and Banfi were deported to the Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria, where Banfi died in 1945. Despite the immense loss of Banfi, their architectural practice continued in the same name as before after the war. Especially during the 1950s, they created many of their great projects. With their designs, they strongly reacted against the International Style with its rectilinear forms and taut plane surfaces that have been completely stripped of applied ornamentation. Instead, the group enriched their buildings with medieval references. For B.B.P.R., their philosophy on art and architecture is somewhat between tradition and modernism; their use of post-beam structures and modular elements parallels with the constructive thinking of modern architects. However, as modernism rejects the existence of historical forms, B.B.P.R. reinterprets history's heritage and continues with respect for the work of their predecessors. Ernesto Nathan Rogers referred to it as “preesistenze ambientali” (the pre-existing environment) and adopt a “caso per caso” (case by case) interpretation to work with, instead of against, the surroundings. One of their well-known designs is the creation of the Torre Velasca in Milan, with strong references to medieval architecture. The architects were also frequently employed to create interior spaces altogether with furniture designs.

VAT within the EU: When buying or delivering an item within the EU, VAT usually applies and will be added.

Silvio Cavatorta bookcase and storage unit, mahogany, brass, Italy, 1940s

This elegant library is a striking example of Italian design, crafted by designer Silvio Cavatorta in the late 1940s. A nice detail are the small legs on each side of the shelves which creates an elegant feature.

Italian designer Ernesto Valabrega (1901-1944) was born in Turin, as the son of celebrated designer and cabinetmaker Vittorio Valabrega (1861-1952). His father Vittorio was, together with his brother, the founder of Fratelli Valabrega (Valabrega Brothers Company, since 1884) that was situated in Turin. During the 1890s, Vittorio became the sole owner of the company and had great success with his refined wooden furniture. Vittorio Valabrega became well-known for his furniture in the floral Art Nouveau style, but as a true child of the 19th century, his company also manufactured furniture in Neo-Renaissance and the French Rococo Louis XV-style. His designs received positive attention and were awarded at World Exhibitions. At the famous exhibition in Paris in 1900, Vittorio even received a gold medal.

It was at the age of 24 that Ernesto got on board with his father’s business. His involvement from 1925 onwards had a great impact on the company. Ernesto decided to change the company’s name to Mobilart in 1928 and radically redirected the course. Whereas Vittorio was inspired by a variety of contemporary and historic styles, Ernesto chose for a different approach. He renounced the 19th century mixture of styles and approached furniture design in the same manner as the highly influential William Morris of the English Arts and Crafts movement. Their reform was an artistic reaction to the widespread industrialization of the 19th century. Ernesto despised products of poor quality and chose high quality materials that would last a lifetime. The furniture he created in the late 1920s and 1930s are a true testament to his beliefs. Designed by Franco Campo and Carlo Graffi for their own label, Home, it reflects the era’s growing fascination with practical, customizable pieces. The structure is composed of five rectangular units, punctuated by distinct circular and curved forms. Some compartments are open rectangles with rounded edges, while the cabinet doors feature cut-out handles that form half-moon shapes. These geometric elements complement each other in a rhythmic sequence: rectangles stacked in neat lines, half-circles breaking up the straight edges, and rounded cubes offering an almost sculptural contrast. The mixed use of walnut veneer and white lacquered parts enhance its bold, graphic allure. The piece is all about combining simple geometry with more organic lines. Notice for instance the big, scooped-out arc. Needless to say, the craftsmanship here is top-notch: the walnut panels are book-matched for a continuous grain pattern, and the white lacquer frames everything cleanly. While striving for independence, their early works bore Mollino's influence, evident in their use of spine curves and organic materials. With his final major invention, André Sornay demonstrated a remarkable capacity for self-reflection and innovation, rethinking his design approach to align with the evolving needs of his era. Campo and Graffi were known for their inventive approach, and this piece perfectly illustrates that forward-thinking spirit of Italian design in the post-war years.

Franco Campo (1926-2012) was born in Turin and pursued architecture and engineering at the Politecnico di Torino, where he befriended Carlo Graffi (1925-1985), his future partner. Both studied under Carlo Mollino, and after graduating in 1950, they continued collaborating with Mollino on various architectural and design projects, exhibiting together and participating in competitions. While striving for independence, their early works bore Mollino's influence, evident in their use of spine curves and organic materials. In the early 1950s, they focused on custom interiors and furniture for shops and residences, reflecting Turin's urban expression through rigid, sculptural forms.

In pursuit of accessible furniture, Campo and Graffi founded Home, a socialist-inspired furniture factory. Their designs, characterized by a sober aesthetic with functional nuances, echoed Scandinavian influences. Home enjoyed success, operating stores in Turin, Genoa, and Rome, until it faced a devastating setback in 1964 when a fire destroyed the factory. Following the dissolution of their partnership, Carlo Graffi resumed collaboration with Carlo Mollino, while Franco Campo pursued solo ventures, specializing in exclusive furniture and interiors.
