Paul Láslzó Bench in Walnut and Cane

This sofa or bench by Paul László is designed with a caned back and seat that is in good patinated condition. The legs of the sofa are pointed outwards and feature straight lines. The walnut frame supports both the cane seat and then functions as a holder of the back. The deep colored walnut is also used on the sides where they form an almost handle-like geometric appearance.

Paul László (1900-1993) was an American-Hungarian architect, interior designer and furniture designer. Láslzó, born in Hungary, grew up within a family of cabinetmakers. At the age of 25 he founded his own design firm in Stuttgart where he developed an original modernist language. Already at that point in his career did László gain widespread attention from prominent figures such as George Nelson. In 1936 Lászlo left Hungary in fear of the Nazi regime. Here he opened his own design studio in New York. Quickly, he became known within the elite scene and designed pieces and interiors for Elizabeth Taylor, Barbary Stanwyck and Ronald Reagan. His designs are now seen as typical Californian Modern. László established this by means of mix between the strictly Classic Viennese school, clean European modernism and comfortable elegant American lush and voluminous design.
